Tiger biology - Anatomy - Behavioral Adaptations
The litter is of 4 to 5 kind cubs around 1.5 kg in weight. The sight of the cubs becomes active after fourteen days. The tigress is a very possessive of her cubs and teaches them all survival skills in the wild. The best is she teaches them to hunt on their own as they reach maturity. By two and half years the cubs are adults and can survive in the forests on their own. After this period the cubs have to create their own territory.
These animals are well adapted to their environment and are excellent hunters. They predate on herbivores but will consume any other animal if hungry. They are powerfully built with strong hind muscles to pounce on the prey. Their canines are built to pierce the neck and rupture major arteries and the spinal cord. The length of canines is usually two and half inches.
The tigers do not chase their prey for long distance but rather prefer to ambush. Hence the nature has given them an appearance and color that helps in camouflage in their immediate surroundings.
White Tiger
The white tiger is a case of recessive gene it is not a separate species. In all characteristics and abilities they are similar to normal orange ones. No more found in the wild these animals have successfully bred in the zoo all over the globe. Mohun the first white tiger was discovered near the forest of Bandhavgarh National Park.
The tiger is the main attraction of Indian wildlife among all major mammals. It is the top predator in the food chain and an indicator species regarding the health of its ecosystem. It is severely endangered due to poaching and habitat destruction. There are only fourteen to fifteen hundred tigers left in the wild in India.
