Asiatic Lion There are hundreds of species of mammals, thousands of species of reptiles and myriads of insect forms besides colorful butterflies. India is rich in faunal diversity due to variations in terrain, climate and altitude. Though tiger is the most popular animal, nature lovers should make an effort to see as much of Indian Wildlife as possible. Some species like the Gharial, Salt Water Crocodile and River Dolphins, Sharks, Hard Ground Swamp Deer are highly endangered and rare. Major efforts are being made to conserve these species and bring them back from the brink of extinction. Similarly Tigers, Leopards and many other species in India are facing extinction. There are many species in the wilderness of the country whose status is not known and are critically endangered. The Project Tiger Program The program was established in the year with the sole objective of saving the tiger and its ecosystem. In the process the whole ecosystem was rejuvenated. Protected Areas in India |

In order to conserve and save species facing extinction the Government of India has designated areas of ecological importance as protected areas. These are designated as National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries which define the level of protection and privilege granted. Wildlife Protection and Conservation measures are taking firm grounds in the country and many species have been saved. The protected areas like National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries are playing a key role in saving Indian animal, birds, butterflies and reptiles. |
