Kaziranga National Park
Kaziranga is the best place to see the One Horned
India Rhinoceros and other wildlife North East India. It is a marshy habitat much preferred by the rhino in India. The tall elephant grass is spread over the preserve and is a unique habitat for water buffalo and swamp deer as well. The Kaziranga National Park is situated in Golaghat and Nagaon district. It is home to wide variety of animals including the wild elephants.
The dense tropical moist forests encourage growth of broadleaf trees. Brahmputra river is the life line of the forests. The park is home to Bengal tigers who thrive here along with the panther and other small carnivores. Hoolock Gibbon. Asamese macaque, Golden Langur and Capped Langur are added attractions. Herbivores include hog deer, barking deer, sambar and wild boar.
Other less seen wildlife is pangolin, bison, rhesus macaque, sloth bear, porcupine, fishing cat, leopard cat, jungle cat, grey mongoose, large indian civet, small indian civet, small indian mongoose, common otter, hog badger, chinese ferret badger, Ganges and Indus riverdolphin and orange bellied himalayan squirrel.
The best Kaziranga lodges are available for accommodation. There are many hotels and resorts avilable for accommodation outside the preserve.
Best Time to Visit Kaziranga National Park
Kaziranga's safaris are best during mid-November to early April. The park is closed during the rainy seasons or monsoon. The river inundates nearly the whole park causing stress and danger to the animals.
How to Get there
Air : The nearest airport is situated at Guwahati, which is 217-km. The other airport is located at Jorhat, 97-km from Kaziranga.
Rail : The nearest rail head is Furkating, situated 75-km.
Road : Kohora is he main gate of Kaziranga Wildlife Sanctuary, at Kohora
on the NH-37. ASTC and
private buses stop here on their way to and from Guwahati, Tezpur and Upper Assam.
